Do Whitening Strips Work?

Teeth Whitening

Given a chance, all of us would want beautiful pearly-white teeth. In order to have white teeth and a great smile, it is necessary to follow dental care. Many people opt for a process called teeth whitening, that involves the use of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These compounds help clear the strains. While some people opt for professional teeth whitening that is performed by a dentist, some try to whiten their teeth in the confines of their home by using teeth whitening strips or kits.

The most preferred method of teeth whitening at home is the use of the aforementioned strips. These strips are not only affordable, but very easy to use too. You can buy these strips for just USD 10 to USD 30. They are very cheap in comparison to professional teeth whitening, which may cost you anywhere between USD 500 and USD 3200. However, don’t expect miracles. If you are looking for fast results, it is better to visit your dentist.

How Do Whitening Strips Work?

These strips are made of a flexible plastic called polyethylene. It is coated with a thin application of bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. When you apply the strips, the coating on the strip breaks down or oxidizes on coming in contact with the moisture in the mouth. When the peroxide comes into contact with the enamel of teeth, it removes the discoloration and stains from the teeth.

You need to apply these strips on the teeth as per the directions given on the package. Certain strips may need to be applied for at least half an hour, while some can be worn overnight. The strength of carbamide peroxide is half the strength of bleaching trays, which is why some of the strips can be kept overnight.

You can notice the difference in just a few days of using the strips, or you may need several days to get the desired effect. Many times, you may find your teeth looking whiter, but this may last only for a few days. Do keep in mind that eating certain food items, chewing tobacco, drinking excessive coffee or aerated drinks, or smoking can stain your teeth. So, make sure that you don’t end up undoing the effects of the strips.

Though teeth whitening strips are easy to use and very affordable teeth whitening products, do follow a dental care regimen to keep your teeth in a good condition. If you already have discolored teeth, you can try strips to whiten your teeth. However, do not expect the dazzling results which you get when you undergo a professional teeth whitening process, from these strips. Also, do not wear the strips for more than the stipulated time on the pack as you may end up having sensitive teeth for a long time. Your gums may also be badly affected, if the instructions are not carefully followed.
