Ceramic Braces

Orthodontics

Malocclusion, which refers to the misalignment of the teeth, is said to be one of the most common dental problems. Besides affecting one’s smile, this dental problem can also have an adverse effect on one’s oral health. Hence, to deal with all these problems, one can opt for orthodontic treatment. In this treatment, the dentist brings your teeth in their desired position, with the help of brackets and wires, so that they look perfectly aligned. There are different types of orthodontic braces such as metal braces (which are most common), ceramic braces (an aesthetic version of braces), and invisalign braces (which consist of clear plastic aligners that are removable). There are also lingual braces, where the braces are placed on the lingual or inner surfaces of teeth, which renders them invisible to other people.

What are Ceramic Braces?
These are dental braces where the brackets that are placed on the teeth to secure the wire passing through them, are made of ceramic rather than metal. As they are made of ceramic, they merge with the teeth and are not easily visible. These are very popular among adults, and some may feel comfortable using these, as they do not irritate the gums.

Reviews
Although these braces are often compared to the invisible braces, or invisalign, they are easily visible due to the metal wire passing through the brackets. These brackets are very strong and if bound with a plasma light stay on for a long period. However, the white ligatures (the elastic that hold the wire to the brackets) may get stained, which adversely affects the aesthetics of these braces. Also, they are slightly bigger than the metal braces and cannot be used for all types of orthodontic treatment.

Cost
Needless to say, the cost of these aesthetic braces is more than that of your conventional metal braces. In fact, this is where these braces lose out to the ones that have metal brackets. The cost of these braces can go up to anywhere between USD 7000 to USD 8000. These braces cost more than the average ones, because of the ceramic brackets.

Do consult your orthodontist to find out which braces would be the most suitable ones for you. Since smoking and drinking caffeinated drinks might stain these braces, you might want to quit smoking, and cut down on the intake of food items or drinks that might stain the teeth. Also, do follow the guidelines recommended by the dentist regarding caring for the braces.
